About Me

I am a designer / creative problem solver with a background in analog visual art and computer science.

Interdisciplinary practice excites me – it seems like a way for me to bridge gaps and ‘be the change I want to see in the world’.

I enjoy consuming and synthesizing complex information- making lofty ideas and processes plain for others. Because I code and design, folks find me most helpful as a liaison between stakeholders, visual designers & developers.

For fun: My husband and I work on our 1918 frame bungalow and hang out with our canine children.

If you’re still curious, check out: my design process and my design philosophy

Also, here are some design resources I love.

I can help you create fun, elegant experiences and solve complex problems.

My skill set is rooted in a life-long love of visual art and a passion for learning new things.  I use research, collaborative design and a rapid build-measure-learn cycle to get results on projects of all types.  In the last few years, I have gained a lot of experience designing with AI and ML.

PS: I’ve also written a bit about my process and philosophy.

Product Design & UX

As a Designer, I’ve had the privilege to work with world-class teams, small and large, on a variety of different challenges and in a variety of styles (XP, Agile, Safe, Scrum, etc…).

My most recent work, at Allstate, has been focused on the application of machine learning to customer and employee-facing products in the auto insurance space.

At Motorola Solutions, I helped land mobile radio (walkie talkie) system engineers to plan radio networks. In free time, I worked to empower police officers to rebalance their teams’ workloads, hopefully reducing stress and improving police behavior.  Creating technology to sell to police was then and still is an ethical dilemma for me.  If you are interested, I’d love to discuss design ethics with you.

Speaking and Team Building

I am painfully introverted, but I like to help spread great pragmatic design skills. At Allstate, I’ve helped develop an interdisciplinary group called the Design Hackers Guild – a highlight of my career and a tremendous joy in my workweek.

Coding

As a hands-on UXer, I’ve always felt the need to be sure my ideas are feasible. Over the years, I’ve learned to code so that I can produce interactive prototypes rapidly and test my own designs/theories. Though tools like Figma, Invision, and now the Sketch Cloud are making this more feasible without code, I still believe a loFi computer program will teach us more than a hiFi mockup, in most circumstances.

Also, I have completed a Full-Stack Coding Certification at The Northwestern University School of Professional Studies. Our cohort focused on the MERN stack: Mongo, Express, React, Node

Best skills: HTML, CSS, jQuery, JS

Intermediate skills: React, Node, Mongoose / Mongo, SQL / Sequelize, SVG, Canvas
